The Centre for German Studies was established in 2011 with the objective of expanding knowledge, learning and research on German language, literature and culture in India and contributing to India's close links with Germany. Its courses are designed to familiarize students with the culture and society of the past and present German speaking world through a rigorous training of writing, reading, comprehension and skills in German language. Allied courses are also offered to students for nurturing their interests in interdisciplinary research areas like translation studies, culture studies, literary theory, etc. The Centre emphasizes student-centric interactive learning which gives students a space for personal development.


After successful completion of three years the students are eligible for B.A. (Hons.) degree in German Studies. The M.A. programme offers a range of fields like genres of literature, literary movements, periods in literary history, translation & interpretation, linguistics, didactics of German Language, the cultural and political history. In the final semester of the M.A. students are required to write a dissertation on an area of their choice.

Programmes offered at Centre for German Studies

1) B.A. (Hons.) in German Studies

The B.A. (Hons.) Programme focuses on intensive language learning in the first year. Students are trained in the skills of writing, reading, speaking and comprehension according to updated pedagogy in Foreign Language Teaching. In the succeeding years, language teaching is combined with the study of literature, cultural and political history of German speaking countries, translation, linguistics and other subjects

2) M.A. in German Studies

The M.A. programme offers a range of fields like genres of literature, literary movements, periods in literary history, translation & interpretation, linguistics, didactics of German Language, the cultural and political history. In the final semester of the M.A. students are required to write a dissertation on an area of their choice

3) Ph.D. in German Studies

The Ph.D. programme comprises two semesters of course work followed by six semesters for thesis (extendable by one more semester without fellowship).
