Professor S.A. Bari

Professor S. A. Bari joined The Central University of Gujarat as its second Vice Chancellor on 25th August 2014. Prior to this he was the Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University at Shimoga in Karnataka, where he completed his four year term on 24th July 2014. Born in Mysore, Karnataka, he had his education there.After completing his masters in History from University of Mysore, he commenced his teaching career as Lecturer from Mangalore University in 1982 and completed his PhD from there in Economic History. In 1989 he moved to Kuvempu University as Reader and Head of The Department of History and Archaeology. In 1994 he became a Professor in the same Department. He also completed a Post Doctoral work through a project from ICHR on Nationalism in rural and tribal areas of Chickmagalore and Shimoga . He was also the Coordinator of The Centre for South Asian Studies at KU (a UGC Funded Project).
He has been the Dean of Faculty of Arts KU for three terms, he has been the Dean of Students Welfare, Director of Prasaranga KU (publications division). He was the Registrar I/c and the Registrar Evaluation.He was also the founder Director of The Directorate of Distance Education KU. He was the member of Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council. In 2010 he was apointed by the Government of Karnataka as Special Officer to establish a new University Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University at Bellary. He was awarded The University Foundation day Certificate of Merit and in 2012 The Directorate of NCC Honored him with the Honorary Col Commandant of NCC.
He has guided both Mphil and PhD students and seven students have obtained their Doctorate under his supervision and four are presently working with him. He has attended a number of National and international conferences both in India and abroad and published research papers. He has also been a member and associate of many national and international academic bodies. He has been a member of various academic boards, committees of the UGC, NAAC and policy making bodies of Higher education and Youth Services in the state of Karnataka. He has visited Canada, Belgium, Syria, Hong Kong, UAE and Malaysia, Belarus and Sweden on various academic assignments. In December 2014 he attended an academic program on Leadership in Higher Education at OAED, Oxford,UK. In June 2015 he was a member of the Hon. President of India's delegation to Sweden and Belarus.
Presently he is a member of the UGC Empowered Committee for BSR in Universities, Central Board of Film Certification, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, GoI, member of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), GoI, and a member of the Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO and many academic committees of the MHRD with a keen interest in the educational reforms that the MHRD is initiating in Higher Education. He is also committed to the overall development of the Central University of Gujarat.
