About the School

The School of Library and Information Science at Central University of Gujarat offers programs that are relevant in the present context of knowledge society. It was created to train skilled individuals who can preserve cultural heritage and scientific progress, teach students to develop automated libraries and archives, and prepare information professionals to improve access to valuable knowledge through digitization, while also engaging them in activities that support the creation of a Digital India. The teaching process involves interactive lectures, video tutorials, field visits, internships, assignments and seminars, projects, and hands-on training. The M.Lib.I.Sc. program offers a cutting-edge curriculum that incorporates the latest developments in library and information science. This course places significant emphasis on integrating research, communication, education, and industry interaction using smart digital library management platforms and dedicated software. SLIS has faculty with a wide range of academic and industry experience at both national and international levels, facilitating the exposure of students to diverse experiences. Students in the direct PhD program have undertaken innovative and evolving research in areas such as bibliometrics, research data management, cultural heritage, memory institutions, and eContent management.

The department was established in 2012 and runs two programs. The Master of Library and Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) is a two-year integrated program that aligns with NEP guidelines and integrates AI-driven components. The PhD in Library and Information Science program was launched in 2017.

Specialized Equipment / Software

SLIS has installed the latest Integrated Library Management Software (ILMS), such as SOUL and Koha, and digital library software, DSpace. The school also has a book digitization scanner to give students hands-on training on technical skills required for scanning and digitization and the use of optical character recognition.
